Drain abcess or remove tumor

Goal is to make a diagnosis of the origin. Laparoscopic exam allows the surgeon to evaluate the abdominal mass (tumor or abscess)more completely. Avoiding the large incision. Once tissue is removed a clear diagnosis can be made and the appropriate treatment performed.
  Procedure
 

Diagnostic laparoscopy with biopsy or excision (when feasible) of mass or drainage of abscess.

  Length of hospital stay
 
Performed as an outpatient in most cases.
  Potential complications
 
SIDE EFFECTS - unless bowel if removed, usually none COMPLICATIONS - bleeding, or spread of infection if abscess is present.
