| Inflamatory bowel disease (IBD) of colon (such as Crohn's disease or Chronic Ulcerative Colitis) |

Treatment is removal of the diseased area. May require removal only small area or might require removal of the entire bowel thus requiring the intestinal contents to empty into a bag on the side of the abdomen (ileostomy or colostomy). |

|
Average length of stay is 4 - 5 days. |

SIDE EFFECTS - Diarrhea if large amount of colon is removed. COMPLICATIONS - Bleeding, leakage at site where the bowel is reconnected, or a stricture at the site of reconnection producing an obstruction. |
