  Cancer of stomach, body and /or antrum (Cancer involving a portion of the middle or lower 1/3 of stomach)
  Treatment goals
 

Remove the diseased area.

  Treatment
 
Remove portion of the stomach around the cancer including the lymphnodes that are close by. Might require removing the upper half of stomach with a portion of the esophagus for cancers at the top of the stomach. Cancers in the lower half of the stomach can be treated by removing 2/3 of stomach and connecting the remaining stomach to the small intestines
  Procedure
 

Laparoscopic subtotal gastrectomy or laparoscopic esophagogastrectomy.

  Length of hospital stay
 
4 days for subtotal gastrectomy. 7 days for esophago-gastrectomy
  Potential complications
 
SIDE EFFECTS - Reduction in volume of food one is able to eat. COMPLICATIONS - leakage at connection of intestines to the stomach, and obstruction of the flow of food from the stomach into the intestine
