  Duodenal ulcer disease, chronic with pain or obstruction (pain that is un-responsive to medical therapy or obstruction that won't resolve with medical therapy)

Remove acid so ulcer can heal.

  Treatment
 
Treatment is to reduce acid production. Done by cutting nerves to stomach which are capable of increasing acid production, and also by removing the end of the stomach which also increases acid production when food enters it. Also for obstruction caused by chronic ulcer disease, the same operation also cures obstruction.
  Procedure
 

Laparoscopic antrectomy with vagotomy or highly selective vagotomy without antrectomy.

  Potential complications
 
SIDE EFFECTS - reduced volume of stomach thereby reducing amount of food eaten per meal. COMPLICATIONS - bleeding, leakage or obstruction at site of connection between stomach and intestine.
