  Cancer of stomach, proximal (tumor located in upper 1/4 of stomach)

remove tumor including some of esophagus

  Treatment
 
remove upper portion of stomach and the lower part of the esophagus then reconnect stomach to esophagus. Also open up the end of the stomach to allow food to leave more easily after the surgery.

  Potential complications
 
SIDE EFFECTS - Because the upper portion of stomach is removed, the nerves that go to the somach are automatically divided thereby producing a delay in the stomach to empty. Opening the end of the stomach removes this problem. COMPLICATIONS - leakage at the site of connection between the esophagus and stomach. Bleeding from the area around the surgery site. Possible stricture of the connection site from scar tissue.
