  Perforated Sigmoid Diverticulum (Rupture of diverticulum on sigmoid colon)
  Treatment goals
 

Remove the diseased area. Colostomy performed because the intestine is usually not cleaned enough to reconnect.

  Treatment
 
Remove section of sigmoid colon (located near the end of the colon) and bring out the upper portion as a colostomy. This is usually a temporary measure. To be connected later.
  Procedure
 

Laparoscpoic Sigmoid resection with end colostomy (Also known as 1st stage Hartmann's procedure)

  Length of hospital stay
 
3-4 days depending on the severity of infection caused by the perforation.
