The Institute of Laparoscopy is a physician cooperative entity whose focus is to improve the delivery of surgical care for diseases of organ-systems of the abdomen and chest. Many physicians affiliated with the institution can deliver the state of the art surgical care in these areas. The emphasis is directed toward the minimally invasive surgery techniques. Since the late 1980s, surgical techniques for the treatment of diseases related to the abdomen and chest have increased substantially in the area of minimally invasive surgery. The Institute, in like manner, pursues these methods. Also, in conjunction with the Department of Surgery at LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport, Louisiana, the Institute has been responsible for training surgeons in the medical school, from abroad and from all over North America. The Institute along with LSU Surgery Department established a laparoscopic surgical fellowship in 1995 to facilitate the training process. The fellowship requires one to study for at least six months or up to one year. The candidates for this fellowship must have completed their formal training in General Surgery and must be board eligible. The Willis Knighton Health System in Shreveport has dedicated 13 state of the art operating suites for the sole purpose of laparoscopic-thoroscopic surgery thereby assuring the best technical support for refining the more complex minimally invasive procedures. Surgeons working within the institute are skilled in minimally invasive procedures for the esophagus, lung, stomach, spleen, pancreas, gall bladder and bile duct system, liver, small intestines, large intestine, kidney, adrenal glands, and hernias. The Institute is one of the most experienced in the south with laparoscopic colon resections, with laparoscopic gastric procedures, and with anti-reflux fundoplications. The latest addition to the Institutes repertoire is the laparoscopic gastric banding for morbid obesity. The Institutes goal is to refine existing techniques while pursuing new frontiers of minimally invasive surgery. |
